Of Birds and Bees

There are many forms of contraception available to couples today, but not all contraceptives protect against sexually transmitted disease. And some contraceptives have side effects that can be troublesome down the road. Two of the most commonly prescribed medications are antidepressants and birth control pills, and both of these can have serious sexual side effects.

Many birth control pills interfere with sexual desire even after they are not longer being used and have long been out of a woman’s system. And some of the studies suggest that these difficulties might be permanent, or at least very difficult to reverse.

Human sexuality is that it is very complex and very much influenced by psychological, emotional, and social factors.  Still, if you are taking or have taken, either of these medications and if you are have problems with sexual desire or sexual functioning, please get help from a qualified sex therapist. Contact DrSara for an appointment or find a qualified sex therapist near you.
