Past Positions

1988—1993   Clinical Assistant Professor at UNC-Chapel Hill and Program Coordinator of High Management Unit, John Umstead Hospital, Butner, NC.

  • Developed behavioral contingency programming for a unit of 37 severely and persistently mentally ill patients who were unmanageably aggressive or self-destructive.
  • Conducted staff education programs and supervised nursing and activiy theray staff in the implementation of behavioral programs. 
  • Pioneered the implementation of Dialictical Behavior Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder in the state hospital system (milieu, skills classes, individual therapy, and peer consultation). 
  • Led various administrative and problem-solving team meetings and retreats for professional and paraprofessional staff. 
  • Presented the programs and methods of the Management Unit to the Human Rights Committee. 
  • Under my leadership, the Management Unit earned the distinction of being identified as the unit with the least use of restrictive treatment (seclusion and restraint) in the entire state hospital system. 
  • Taught one undergraduate course, either Personality or Behavioral Medicine, per semester. 
  • Supervised up to three graduate students per semester who were assigned two days per week to the Management Unit for clinical practicum. Served as supervisor for graduate clinical psychology assessment practicum.
 
1987—1988       Staff psychologist, Holly Hill Hospital, Raleigh, NC
  • Conducted interviews, performed personality, projective, intelligence, and neuropsychological evaluations and participated in treatment team.
  • Led group therapy and supervised nursing and social work staff who were co-leading the group therapy.
     
1986—1987       Medical Psychology Resident, Behavioral Medicine Program, Duke University Medical Center
  • Psychodiagnostic Lab and Combined Medical Specialties Rotations. Conducted clinical interviews, interpreted psychological tests, and wrote psychodiagnostic evaluation reports for psychiatric and medical referrals. Conducted screening evaluations for patients awaiting penile implant, cardiac surgery, and other invasive medical procedures. Conducted neuropsychological evaluations.
  • Pain Management and Behavioral Physiology Rotations. Worked with hospitalized chronic pain patients. Conducted screening evaluations for biofeedback treatment clinic. Co-lead a behavioral group for chronic pain patients.

  • Conducted intellectual evaluations of public school students as part of the process for determining elegibility for special education programs.
 
1985—1986    Psychology Trainee, Graham B. Dimmic Child Services, Lexington, KY
  • Conducted intake interviews and psychotherapy with families and children.
 
1984—1985    Assessment Consultant, McGregor & Associates, Winchester, KY
  • Traveled to rural Appalachian school districts to conduct intellectual evaluations of public school students as part of the process for determining elegibility and placement in special education programs.
 
1980—1983    Psychology Trainee, Eastern State Hospital, Lexington, KY
  • Provided psychological assessment, individual and group psychotherapy to severely and persistently mentally ill patients on a rehabilitation unit and on a community transition unit. 
  • Participated in multidisciplinary treatment team. Helped implement behavioral contingency program.
