Sleeping Between Contractions

Morgan went through years of infertility treatments and lost the baby in the third trimester, but she persisted, and, at long last was pregnant again. This time she was slow to warm to the pregnancy and it wasn’t until the very end when all the tests came back clear that she allowed herself to name, and love, this baby. So, with all she had been through, it came as a surprise that she could allow herself to experience hypnosis. And when she walked out of my office she wasn’t sure anything was really all that different. She was afraid in a very certain kind of way, that she was going to be terrified throughout labor and that she wouldn’t be able to keep her eyes off the monitors. But when she went to the hospital to have the baby she shocked everyone by sleeping between contractions just as I had suggested she could. And she never once looked at the monitors; she just stayed in the zone, in trance, relaxed, calm, and focused. Her 18 hour labor seemed much shorter and she was fully alert and un-medicated when it came time to push. No wonder some people think hypnosis is witchcraft or magic. But it isn’t.
